Official: OSU shooting prompts recommendations
2010-09-02
Ohio State University is considering changing its policies regarding new hires, recommendations an official is linking to a deadly workplace shooting. University vice president of human resources Larry Lewellen tells The Columbus Dispatch the school wants to learn from what happened. A probationary employee who was about to lose his job shot and killed one supervisor in March, wounded another and then took his own life. The recommendations announced in a campus-wide e-mail on Wednesday call...

About 330 Ohioans with pre-existing health conditions, such as cancer or diabetes, are getting coverage under a new high-risk insurance pool that's part of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul. The nonprofit Medical Mutual of Ohio insurance company is administering the program that began Wednesday. The company says 25 applications are pending and 3,400 more have been downloaded through its website. The state anticipates about 5,500 getting coverage through the plan. It will be in...
Audit suggests possible end of Ohio Lottery panel
2010-09-01
An audit done amid political sniping recommends making the Ohio Lottery Commission a quasi-public entity or eliminating the panel and leaving the director in charge. State Auditor Mary Taylor also says the lottery should have a smaller staff and more flexibility to adapt to changes in the gambling landscape. Timing was an issue heading into the political season. Democratic Governor Ted Strickland, who is running for re-election, had pressed Republican Taylor, a candidate for lieutenant...

Ohio pets' fate to depend on owners
2010-08-31
A spokeswoman for Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland says new rules will allow the state to pull animals away from owners who have behaved questionably. The decision comes after a bear attack this month in Columbia Station that resulted in the death of its 24-year-old caretaker, Brent Kandra of Elyria. The bear's owner, Sam Mazzola had lost his federal license to display the animal but legally continued to keep a menagerie of wild beasts as pets. Strickland, farm groups and the Humane Society agreed...
Stats show fewer Ohio traffic tickets
2010-08-30
The number of traffic tickets dropped across Ohio last year, with a particularly steep decline in the southwestern part of the state. The Dayton Daily News reports a study of Ohio Supreme Court data shows total traffic cases were down 7.2 percent statewide and by nearly 13 percent in eight counties from Clark to Butler. Drunken driving cases dropped 6.1 percent statewide in 2009 from 2008, with a 13.1 percent decline in southwestern Ohio. Authorities say a number of factors could be...
Newspaper: Dead remain on Ohio voter rolls
2010-08-30
A newspaper reports nearly 5,800 Ohioans who've died are still registered to vote and that ballots may have been cast in the names of at least 16 after their deaths. The Columbus Dispatch reported Monday that it analyzed voter information that didn't completely match Bureau of Motor Vehicles records. The Ohio Secretary of State's office had compared the data and last month s office says human or computer errors are to blame for any instances suggesting a dead person voted.
Ohio graduation rate dips for second straight year
2010-08-27
Ohio's graduation rate dipped in 2009 for the second year in a row, even as schools showed overall improvement in student achievement. According to the state report card released Friday, 83 percent of seniors graduated from high school in 2009, down from 84.6 percent in 2008 and from the decade-high 86.9 percent in 2007. State superintendent Deborah Delisle says it's unclear why the graduation problem persists. Eighty-eight percent of school districts and more than 68 percent of school...
Patent dispute spins around Cedar Fair's new ride
2010-08-26
Amusement park operator Cedar Fair says a legal dispute won't ground a new high-flying ride planned for several of its parks. A Dutch company will make the WindSeeker, which will spin riders 300 feet above the ground at speeds reaching 30 mph. Cedar Fair, based in Sandusky in northern Ohio, plans to introduce the WindSeeker next year at Ohio parks Cedar Point and Kings Island, as well as Canada's Wonderland near Toronto and Knott's Berry Farm outside Los Angeles. A ride maker in Australia...
The County lends Goodwill some vans
2010-08-26
The Lorain County Commissioners have agreed to donate a couple of handicap accessible vans to Goodwill Industries of Lorain County. Goodwill requested the vehicles a few weeks ago with the idea to use them for transportation needs for residents whose disabilities make it difficult to get around on their own. Many of those residents were left with no other option after the County cut back its LCT routes. The vans are anything but new. Both of the vehicles to be used have at least 150,000...
Ohio seeks system of electric cars
2010-08-26
Ohio is seeking federal money to pay for more than 100 electric vehicles and a network of charging stations statewide. The Ohio Department of Transportation's application for a $11.3 million federal grant says the goal is to "electrify Ohio's transportation system." U.S. transportation officials will make award decisions in September. Under the state's proposal, the electric vehicles would go to partners such as the University of Toledo, which would receive 14 for use by students and...
